Tagging system
What is a tag?
A tag is a marker that you can give to a specific object or content. This makes it easier to quickly find and organize similar content or objects. Tags can be created and customized to enable effective and personal organization of your content, but they also make it easier to collaborate with colleagues working on the same project. Tags have their own name and color.
What are the different types of tags?
In Maltego Evidence you can create eight different classes of tags. This is an overview of the classes of tags that can be created:
Tag Class | Description |
---|---|
General tags | Tags that can be used only for each entity type, i.e. profiles, chat messages, media items or postings. |
Profile tags | Tags that can be used only for profiles. |
Posting tags | Tags that can be used only for postings. |
Chat message tags | Tags that can be used only for chat messages. |
Media item tags | Tags that can be used only for media items. |

Use of tags
How do I set tags?
Setting tags for profiles, postings, media items, and chat messages each works in a similar way. If you want to set a tag for a single object, click the "+" in the Tags column of the corresponding object. All the tags available for that object will be available for you to choose from. By clicking on the corresponding tag, the tag will be set. No confirmation or saving is necessary. If you do not see a plus, this is because you have either already assigned all the tags that would be available to the selected objects, or you have not yet created any tags for this project.
How do I set tags for multiple objects at once?
If you want to set a tag for multiple objects at the same time, please follow the steps below:
Step 1: Select the object group you want to tag from the left menu bar within your project. In the following pictures this is shown exemplarily on postings. All objects of the object group are displayed.
Step 2: Select the objects where you want to set a tag by clicking the box at the beginning of the line. You can tag any number of objects. If you click on the box in the header, all currently visible objects will be marked.
Step 3: Click on the tag icon in the upper left corner of the screenshot from above to set a tag on all currently selected objects. A window will open where you can select which tag you want to set. Only the tags of the selected object class as well as general tags are available for selection.
Step 4: By clicking the "Yes" button you confirm the setting of the tags.
Removing tags
Tags can only be removed from objects individually. In the Tags column of the corresponding object you can see which tags are currently set. By clicking on the corresponding tag, the tag is deleted.
Can I set multiple tags on one object?
An object can have any number of tags. All tags created for the corresponding object class and all general tags are available for selection.
How can I display all objects with a specific tag?
If you have set a tag for one or more objects, a "Tags" drop-down list is displayed in the "Cross Network" drop-down list. If you click on it, all set tags are displayed. Click on the corresponding tag to display all objects with the corresponding tag.
If you want to display only the objects with a specific tag from a network, first click on the corresponding network. Then click on the tag list and select the corresponding tag.
